Join us for our meeting in which we discuss how the club will go about preaching the gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster during Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Fall Callout!
When: Wednesday, Sept 3, 2008, 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Where: PHYS 203

Join us for our fall callout to meet fellow freethinkers at Purdue and find out what we're all about! We'll vote on which day of the week to meet and discuss what members would like to see more or less of for the following year. We'll discuss potential events for the fall, including (but not limited to) Fiction for Fiction, a Flying Spaghetti Monster mock preaching on Talk like a Pirate Day, an Atheist Chalk Walk, an information booth on Separation of Church and State for the upcoming election, movies, fundraisers, volunteering, and more. Don't miss this meeting if you want to voice your opinion or just learn about our club! We hope to see many old and new faces.

[Events] Fiction for Fiction
04/03/08

On Tuesday, April 15th and Wednesday, April 16th, we will be outside CL50 from 10 AM to 4:30 PM. Bring in any religious text (pocket size acceptable) and get a great fiction novel in return. We have classics and recently popular books, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Angels & Demons, Harry Potter, On the Beach, Patriot Games, Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, Silence of the Lambs, The Andromeda Strain, The Giver, The Odyssey, and more!

We hope to get this general message across to as many people as possible. While religious texts may give some moral guidance, that doesn’t mean every word they contain is necessarily true. Morals and insight into human life can be taken from nearly any fiction novel. You have to critically think about what you're reading and not just take it at face value, or how someone is telling you that you should understand it.

[Photos] Free Hugs Video
04/03/08

If you missed the news, we gave out free hugs on campus on Valentine's Day. We also passed out informational fliers that tried to clear up some myths about atheists. One of our members put together a cute slide show of photos. Check it out:

The Exponent also covered our myth debunking meeting, and you can find the article here: http://purdueexponent.org/?module=article&story_id=10173

[Events] Debunking Myths about Atheists
02/21/08

We hope we can dispel some rumors, myths, and stereotypes about atheists in order to gain respect and reduce discrimination. We will have a short presentation followed by personal stories from a panel of students and a Q&A session.

Tuesday, February 26th, 6:00 - 7:30 PM in PHYS 203

Some myths to be discussed:

  • Atheism is a religion
  • Athiests believe in God, but hate Him
  • Atheists worship Satan
  • Atheists have no morals
  • People become atheists because of a bad experience with religion
  • Atheists are more likely to be criminals
  • Without God or gods, life has no meaning
  • Atheists hate religious people
  • Atheists want to force all people to be atheists
  • Atheists are unhappy, can't love, can't have friends, etc

[Events] Root of All Evil? Showing
02/04/08

The Society of Non-Theists will be showing Richard Dawkins' controversial documentary "The Root of All Evil?" on Wednesday, February 6th at 6 PM in PHYS 203. There is no cost, and all students and faculty are welcome. The movie investigates the monotheistic religions of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity and the problems of blind faith.
